The Salem Pantry’s From Shelf to Table Event Raises Crucial Funding to Battle Food Insecurity in Salem and in The North Shore
State Representative Manny Cruz speaks on the importance of The Salem Pantry’s work.
Salem, MA (April 18, 2024) – Last week, the Salem Pantry held its first major fundraising event, From Shelf to Table. The night was dedicated to expanding possibilities through fresh, healthy food.
“It’s been amazing to have so many people from the community invest in making a difference around food insecurity,” said Executive Director Robyn Burns. “The work is far from over, and we cannot do it alone.”
Over one hundred supporters of The Salem Pantry gathered at Ledger on April 10th. The event included a meal prepared by head chef Chef Daniel Gursha, highlighting the wide range of food available at the pantry, including fresh produce, proteins, dairy products, eggs, and pantry staples.
“I had the chance to go down to The Market and see all the delicious food The Salem Pantry offers,”said Chef Gursha. “It was a super fun experience to design tonight’s menu inspired by the fresh produce, dairy and dry goods available.”
Massachusetts State Representative Manny Cruz, the event’s keynote speaker, discussed the importance of The Salem Pantry’s work in the local community.
“55 million Americans throughout our country experience food insecurity and the Commonwealth is no stranger to this issue,” said Cruz. “It is a tremendous honor to be here today in community with all of you and in support of such an incredible organization.”
From Shelf to Table raised over $70,000 to support The Salem Pantry’s programming, including The Market, mobile pantries, and home delivery.
The event was made possible by local sponsors JJ Welch Construction, Institution for Savings, Brookline Bank, Merry Fox Realty, Mass General Brigham Salem Hospital, Salem Harbor Station, Marblehead Bank, The Salem Inn, Crowley, Spire, Tinti & Navins, PC, Salem State University, and Groom Construction.
The Salem Pantry continues to see a steady rise in the number of families using its services. In 2023, The Salem Pantry served 6,510 households made up over 19,900 local community members distributing over 2 million pounds of food.
